2. FOCL and the NRLT Promote Conservation.
The Friends of Claytor Lake, the New River Land Trust, and four other farm and
conservation organizations are partners in a $4,000 grant to promote conservation
of farmlands and forests in the New River region. This grant will help finance
landowner outreach and education as part of a continuing effort to protect the
scenic viewshed, the rural heritage, and open space for recreation and wildlife
habitat along Claytor Lake and throughout the New River watershed.

By pooling resources and contacts, the six partner agencies intend to spread the
word about easements through community meetings, meeting 1-on-1 with local
landowners and partnering with state agencies such as the Virginia Outdoors
Foundation and the Department of Forestry.  The landowner meetings will share
information on conservation options, including how a conservation easement can
save open space and farmland while producing cash from generous state tax
credits. Anyone who would like to be involved is encouraged to contact the Land
Trust office at [540] 951-1704 or nrlt@newriverlandtrust.org.
