1. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training
At the February FOCL Board Meeting, Willy Richardson introduced Pulaski County’s
CERT Program. CERT originated in the pursuit of President Bush’s mission of finding
ways “to train and mobilize volunteers to help when rescue and health emergencies
arise.” It is a program developed by FEMA with the goal of training volunteer
members of neighborhoods, community organizations and workplaces in basic
emergency response skills to enable them to assist when needed in the event of a
disaster overwhelming a community’s professional response teams. The training
takes about 20 hours to complete. If interested in training and becoming a part of
this important team, contact Willy at:

                                wrichardson@pulaskicounty.org.

2. FOCL’s Endorsement of Coast Guard Auxiliary Station
The Friends of Claytor Lake has formally endorsed the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s
request for use of AEP land for a search and rescue station near Spring Hollow.

Guard Auxiliary Search and Rescue Detachment at Spring Hollow.

3. Hydrilla Update
FOCL has obtained quotes from Skip Weigersma of Aquatic Nuisance Control for 4
options of lakewide control of hydrilla. Unfortunately they include some big numbers,
ranging from a low of $57,900 for one application of the herbicide Komeen, to a
high of $99,400 for two applications of the herbicides Reward and Komeen. None of
these options eradicate hydrilla, only help to control it. FOCL is looking into other
options for hydrilla control including another quote and individual homeowner control.
Boardmember Mike Spraker is experimenting with landscape cloth to block the
sunlight from the hydrilla. During the drawdown, he placed it over the areas of
hydrilla growth along his waterfront. We will keep you posted. For more info, check
Aquatic Nuisance Control’s website:
