3. Claytor Lake Water Quality Report
The 2005 Water Quality Report is complete. The program to monitor Claytor Lake’s
water quality began in 1996 and has been done annually since then. It is jointly
coordinated by FOCL and scientists from Ferrum College. Once again we reached
100% collection efficiency, meaning our volunteers have never missed a scheduled
collection since the program’s inception in 1996.

A big thanks to our volunteers for their dedication to this program.

Water sample collection sites along Claytor Lake.

Some highlights from the report:
•What’s monitored:
    1. phosphorous—measure of potential for growth of algae in the lake
    2. chlorophyll-a—a green pigment which measures the algal population
    3. water clarity (through a secci disk)—measure of clearness of water
    4. e coli—measurement of fecal contamination in the lake

•For the first 3 items above, water samples are collected from the 12 sites shown
above every other week from the end of May to the beginning of August.

•E coli is measured at 8 sites once a month in June, July, and August.

•Predicted source of e-coli:  livestock 45.5%, human sources 38.6%.

    results                     2005                   2004                    comment
    phosphorous          36.9ppb              36.9ppb                    same
    chlorophyll-a           9.0ppb                4.5ppb            doubled, not good
secci depth              1.6m                  1.8m           not as good as last year
    e coli                9.1MPN/100mL    45.6MPN/100mL        much better
