3. New River Symposium
The Symposium was an annual event from 1982-1999 but had gone on hiatus until
this year when Rick Roth and Rick Van Noys of Radford University brought the
Symposium back to life May 31 - June 2nd. The Symposium brings together
academic, non-profit, governmental organizations and anyone with a professional
or amateur interest in the New River. The goal of the Symposium remains to break
down barriers between various disciplines through a fuller sharing of information to
create a better understanding and stewardship of the New. Disciplines represented
at the Symposium included economists, biologists, natural historians, architects,
sociologists, historians, geologists, botanists, geographers and archeologists.

Your humble correspondent finds it difficult to sum up (which is the idea behind the
FOCL enews) all of the many interesting things discussed and presented at the
Symposium. But suffice it to say, two things stood out:

   1. The New River, its environs and community is a special place--and those
of us that live or recreate here are not the only ones who think so. The New River
is an American Heritage River meaning it carries a special status. The American
    Heritage Rivers Initiative
has three objectives:  natural resource and environmental
protection, economic revitalization, and historic and cultural preservation. Only 14
rivers in the United States have this designation. Find out more about American
    Heritage Rivers at this link:

            http://www.epa.gov/rivers/

    2. There are a lot of caring people all along the New River--You will find
concerned citizens banding together to care for this special river all along its
path--from where it begins in North Carolina, through Virginia to West Virginia.
Many of these groups participated in the Symposium and are listed below. Find
out more about these groups through their link listed if they have a web presence.

4. Claytor Lake Festival
The Claytor Lake Festival was a huge success with an estimated 8000 folks visiting
the Park! Many folks stopped by the FOCL booth to visit with those who manned
the booth Saturday:  Darla Jennings, Charles Warren, Ronnie Powers, Laura Bullard,
Laura Walters, Jeff Arnold, Bill Cunningham, Shep Zedaker, Larry Moore, John
Toothaker, and Ranny Akers. And we collected over $800 in contributions to the
Friends of Claytor Lake—Thank you!

5. Minutes from May Board Meeting
In the interest of furthering communication concerning The Friends of Claytor Lake
activities, starting with this FOCL enews we will begin publishing the approved
minutes of the previous month’s Board meeting.

FRIENDS OF CLAYTOR LAKE • Board Meeting Minutes • May 8, 2007

Present:  Ronnie Powers, Darla Jennings, Bill Cunningham, Dean Jackson, John
Johnson, Mike Spraker, Alan Stratton, Laura Bullard, Teresa Rogers, Mike McLeod,
Krystal Kearns, John Toothaker, Dave Collett, Mary Rhoades, Dr. Carolyn Thomas

Minutes of April 10, 2007 Board meeting will be reviewed at next Board meeting.

Ferrum College 2006 Water Quality Monitoring Report:  Dr. Carolyn Thomas
gave Claytor Lake an overall “good report card” for 2006 water quality.  E. coli
levels were below minimum state standards. The Trophic State Index (TSI), which
combines Chlorophyll A, Total Phosphorous and Seechi (visibility) Depth readings,
has increased slightly every year to 54.8 for 2006. According to Dr. Thomas
everyone is working to keep the TSI increasing at a natural rate and not have it
accelerated by human causes.

Landowner and Fishermen Issues PowerPoint Presentation by John Toothaker
was reviewed by the Board. John asked for feedback and stated the finished product
will be presented to fishing clubs. Darla reported that printing 1,000 copies of the
Claytor Lake Guide will cost $326 and the Bass Federation will pay $250 of that cost.

New River Symposium will be held at Radford University May 31 through June 2
and there is one free admission available through FOCL for Thursday and Saturday.

Organizational Development, Code of Ethics Review:  Alan Stratton will work
with Dean Jackson to build on FOCL’s draft Code.
