We meet the second Tuesday of each month (with the exception of July & December) in the Council Chambers of the Dublin Town Hall.

All are welcome!

Judy Furr
Woods of the Lake Road is a forest lane that filled us with anticipation “lions, tigers and bears, Oh My!” A long slow drive through nature, a pilgrimage, to the early life of Claytor Lake; the home at the end of the road just had to be someplace special.

The old farm house stood on a knoll above its original location within the flood plain, saved for us to enjoy. Painted board walls, bird feeders, stepping stones for walkways and a screened porch overlooking a perfect view of the lake; Judy’s presence was everywhere.

That view is forever protected because Litt & Judy Furr placed their 37 acres into a “Land Conservation Easement.”

The Friends of Claytor Lake board mourns the loss of a charter member of the organization. Judy Furr responded to a significant challenge to the sustainability of Claytor Lake with heart, love, dedication and determination to secure the future of the lake for generations to come.Litt Furr, Ron Powers and Judy Furr at FOCL's 2007 Christmas celebration.

The Friends of Claytor Lake was fortunate to enjoy the company of Judy & Litt at their 2007 Christmas celebration. It was a time of reflection and of hope for the future.

The Judy Furrs’ of our world are few and a blessing to us. Her legacy lives in the FOCL board of directors and we are thankful for the time we shared with her in search of the common good.

Water Quality
At the February 12th FOCL Board meeting, Dr. Carolyn Thomas of Ferrum College presented the results of our volunteer water quality monitoring of Claytor Lake. This is the 13th consecutive year that the Friends of Claytor Lake has monitored the quality of the water--and all through volunteer sample collectors. To top that off, we've never missed a water collection date. A big thanks to the 2007 Volunteer Monitors for their dedication:

Dr. Carolyn Thomas from Ferrrum College presents the results of our volunteer water quality monitoring program to the FOCL Board.

The overall goal of our water quality monitoring is to determine what is called the trophic state of the lake, which essentially measures how fit the lake is for fishing and swimming. The trophic state is measured in Claytor Lake by monitoring the amount of chorophyll in the lake (a measurement of algae), the amount of phosphorus (which acts as a fertilizer for algae) and the depth of a secchi disk which measures water clarity. (Blue links will tell you more).

And there's good news: all indices indicate a better trophic state for Claytor Lake in 2007! See more about it at under water quality at
this link.

Boating Safety Course
There's no better way to get ready for the boating season than a safe boating class conducted by our very own U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary! The classes are free, extremely informative and fun. If you have not been through one, or you need a refresher, sign up today!
